Frequently Asked Questions about Pregnancy Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology has been used for thousands of years in different communities across the world as a therapy to assist the body to heal itself. When reflex points of the feet (which relate to a specific area of the body) are stimulated the nerves and blood flow to that area of the body is encouraged. This gives the body the chance to clear the area of any toxins that may have built up, nourish the area with fresh blood and allow the nerves and flow of hormones to work effectively.

Your first reflexology treatment will often reveal a wonderful feeling of well being and this usually commences as little as 2 minutes into the treatment. Following your treatment you may well walk out of the treatment room feeling as if your feet are walking on air, totally relaxed and stress free. In the hours following, you may just want to go to sleep.

How does Reflexology work?

Each of the reflex points corresponds to a specific part of the body and is used to clear any blockages in the flow of the systems of the body. In establishing balance the body is able to establish its own natural healing process.

  • Stress reduction – induces a deep state of relaxation, teaching the body an often forgotten state
  • Immune system improvement – sickness rates are reduced and autoimmune diseases have less effect
  • Speeds up recovery – relieves pain following accidents or surgery and allows healing to occur quicker
  • Stimulates nerve endings – encouraging the body to focus on areas that need attention
  • Improves circulation – raises or lowers blood pressure and assists uptake of energy
  • Eliminates body toxins – helps to drain the lymphatic system giving the body a fresh start
  • Balances the hormones – improves the function of the body's organs
  • Assists recovery – following chemotherapy and other cancer treatments
  • Improves metabolism – reduces sluggishness and increases energy,
  • Balances the body – tunes up all body systems
  • Works well with other forms of medicine or therapies

An example of reinstating balance is when you have suffered from a bad infection that has left you with a bad cough and your stomach is upset from the antibiotics that you have taken to fight the bug. When reflexology is administered the cough may at first be exaggerated briefly and then you will feel an easing of the severity. Your stomach will likely flush out, like pressing reset on a computer. The lymphatic system (which runs alongside the blood or circulatory system of the body and is often described as the drainage system) will also reset or flush itself out giving the immune system the chance to function normally again. Overall you will be left feeling much lighter and easier. Sleep will come easily giving you a good sleep to rejuvenate.
